Sawubona, y’all!

I learned something interesting a few weeks ago, something that has served me very well that I hope will e a blessing to you, too.

In Africa, the Zulu people greet one another with the word, “Sawubona,” a word used to say “Hello” but literally means
“I see you!” and is used to say Good Morning, Good Evening and
Good Afternoon.

“I see you!”

How would that make you feel if everywhere you went…every party, every gathering of people, every business meeting, every church gathering…you were greeted with, “Hey, I see you!”

One reason the religious cults grow so quickly is because new attendees are greeted with what is called a “love bomb.” One’s attendance is recognized and one is made to feel accepted, approved of and welcome.

Young people who join gangs are never neglected by the veteran members. Again, the new recruit is welcomed and the gang becomes his new family.

I just reminded myself of the theme song from the sit-com called “Cheers.” It went something like this: “Sometimes you wanna go…where everybody knows your name…and they’re always glad you came…”

Think about that. Does that describe most churches you’ve attended? Does it describe the way YOU greet others? The supposedly overcrowded planet of ours contains many millions of lonely and neglected people who would love being noticed. There s, without a doubt, a massive “search for significance” going on all around us. Some people will do whatever it takes to get noticed, even resorting to crime.

Become a name caller.

Ever notice how a dog’s ears perk up the moment it hears its name called? People are no different. With all the name tag-wearing we do, call that waitress by her name and see if your service won’t improve. Greet people with, “Hello, (name), how good to see you!” Just see if it doesn’t work for you.

It’ll certainly work for THEM!

We are admonished by Jesus to “Love One another.” If it makes people feel loved to hear their names used, use their names 3 or 4 times in a conversation. Try it!

God said, “I see you” when He sent His only begotten Son to the cross on your behalf. Jesus would have died for you if you were the only person on planet Earth. You are God’s favorite child, did you know that?

Every blessing,
